Basque Music, the platform aimed at raising the international profile of Basque music, will be present this week in two of the most relevant events in the world music scene: the Bizkaia International Music Experience (BIME) in Bilbao and the Womex World Music Festival in Katowice, Poland, where Basque Music will sponsor a showcase to promote artists and bands from the Basque Country.
The World Music Expo, or Womex, is considered the world’s largest gathering of music professionals. This year Womex is held in the Polish city of Katowice from October 25ht to 29th. The presence of Basque folk music artists and groups at Womex has been a constant since the early years of the expo: in Santiago de Compostela 2016 the band Xarnege represented Basque music, and in this year’s edition Juan Mari Beltran, a musician from Donostia, is slated to perform on on the offWomex (International Convention Center) stage on Saturday, October 28th, at 11:15pm
Beltran will perform as part of a trio together with Ixiar Jauregi and Errege Belda, under the title ´Euskal Herri Musika eta Soinu-Tresnak´. The concert will feature traditional Basque instruments, including the txalaparta, txistu and alboka. DJ Makala, a regular at the fair, will play on Wednesday, 25th at the Global Club Music Network party.
As in other trade fairs and gatherings, Basque Music will have its own stand at Womex. The stand is open for Basque professionals who want to show their work to other industry professionals. Basque Music also presents a catalogue of groups and soloists related to traditional music, singer-songwriters, folk or fusion. The Basque Music platform is a joint project of Etxepare Basque Institute, Euskal Herriko Musika Bulegoa and Euskadiko Soinuak.
