The Jean Haritschelhar Chair, promoted by the Etxepare Basque Institute at Université Bordeaux Montaigne, has organised a lecture for undergraduate and postgraduate students on the social history of dance music. It will be held on 12 April, with the participation of Xabier Itçaina, expert in Basque music, among others.

The programme will run from 9:00 to 18:00 in Maison de la Recherche Room MLR 001. The opening address will be given by Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne, Nathalie Jaeck, Etxepare Basque Institute Director, Irene Larraza, and Director of the IKER UMR5478 laboratory, Urtzi Etxeberria.

The theme of the morning lecture will focus on tradition and social history in popular cultures. Xabier Itçaina will talk about the social history of dance music in the French Basque Country.

A roundtable discussion will follow with Luc Charles-Dominique (Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology, University of the Côte d´Azur, Nice) and Eva Guillorel (Professor of Modern History, University of Rennes).

In the afternoon, doctoral students will take the floor. Luis Emaldi Azkue, Laurena Haurat, Graxi Irigaray, Maite Luengo and Mathilde Fois Duclerc will take part in a roundtable led by Itçaina and Jean Casenave (University of Bordeaux-Montaigne, IKER).

The Jean Haritschelhar Chair at Université Bordeaux Montaigne is one of the nine chairs maintained by Etxepare at universities around the world. Launched in 2016, this chair promotes the areas of Basque studies that were the subject of Haritschelhar´s research, especially literature and linguistics, as well as Iberian studies. In the spirit of Jean Haritschelhar, a particular focus is on international and cross-border relations.
