ARCO 2020: Carreras Múgica

The ARCO International Contemporary Art Fair is back in Madrid on February 26. Once again, there will only be one Basque gallery at the event: the Bilbao-based Carreras Múgica. Nevertheless, other galleries will also exhibit pieces by Basque artists at the fair.

This is the third consecutive year that Carreras Múgica is the only Basque gallery represented at ARCO Madrid. Carreras Múgica focuses on contemporary art, promoting the work of international artists in Spain and opening the doors to new Basque artists by drawing attention to their work worldwide. At the gallery’s stand at ARCO, Carreras Múgica will show works by the following artists, most of them Basque: Ángel Bados, Eduardo Chillida, June Crespo, Ángels de la Cruz, Raúl Domínguez, Pello Irazu, Erlea Maneros Zabala, Asier Mendizabal, Juan Pérez Agirregoikoa and Richard Serra.

In addition, other international galleries will show works of Basque art in their catalogues. These artists include Esther Ferrer, whose pieces will be shown at the 12 Mira Madrid gallery and àngels barcelona; or the works of Bilbao-based painter Alain Urrutia, shown at the Casado Santapau gallery.

Additionally, the Swiss gallery Hauser & Wirth will organize a monographic stand at ARCO based on Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The gallerists explain that the monographic aims to show a “monumental and intimate vision” of the famous artist. The stand will comprise a “significant and monolithic” piece of art as well as engravings and serigraphs by Chillida.

This edition of ARCO will exhibit works by a total of 2,000 artists in 209 galleries and will be managed for the first time by Maribel López. Unlike past years, there will be no guest country in 2020. The title for this year’s event is ‘It´s Just a Matter of Time’, a concept based on the work of Cuban-American artist Félix González-Torres.
