Basque promotion area
Languages are windows open to the world. They offer a particular and unique conception of the universe. Every community must be responsible for looking after and transmitting its own language, culture and identity. However, Basque must also find its place in this multilingual environment next to the other languages of the world. The ancient Basque language faces new challenges in the twenty-first century and beyond looking within itself, it must open up its doors and project itself in the outside world.
In the task of promoting Basque, the Etxepare Basque Institute encourages spaces of interaction with other languages and communities, and sets up international programmes to better understand and research the Basque language and culture. This work involves a network of university readers, grants for students on these courses, chairs of Basque Studies and education focused on training international teachers.
Furthermore, the Institute participates in top-level international language fairs and organises numerous events related to the language, approaching and informing foreign institutions and individuals about the Basque language and its reality.
Translation is another key dimension of the Institute and as such it has bilingual and trilingual informational publications in both book form and also available online. The word, the language itself, is a tool for artistic creation and the two founding principles of the Institute are intertwined on this point: Basque and artistic creation.
