Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.

Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo in the Colombian capital has included a special focus dedicated to the Basque Country in its 2022 programme. Thanks to this initiative, entitled ´Ventana Vasca´ (Basque Window), in partnership with the Etxepare Basque Institute, the public of Bogotá will have the chance to discover Basque creative talent and enjoy several music, dance and theatre performances at one of the city’s main theatres.

The indie electro group from Iparralde, Lumi, and their organic sounds will launch the ´Ventana Vasca´ on Saturday February 19th at 8pm at Teatro Estudio. The duo formed by Nahia Zubeldia and Manu Matthys processes voices and superimpose layers using synthesizers, guitars and samplers. Lumi will present their second album, ´Bezperen dirdira´, in Bogotá. After releasing an EP in 2016, Moï Moï records released their first LP in 2019, entitled ´Itzal zikinak´.

The theatre company La Dramática Errante will offer two performances of ´Altsasu´ on April 1st and 2nd. The play, written and directed by María Goiricelaya, focuses on the incidents that took place on the 15th of October 2016 in Alsasua, Navarra, and the consequences of the case in the days that followed.

On April 27th, Sigma Project will perform with the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia.  Since it’s the band was formed in 2007, saxophonists Andrés Gomis, Ángel Soria, Alberto Chaves and Josetxo Silguero have given a number of concerts in Europe, the United States and Latin America, to critical and public acclaim.

On July 29th and 30th, Amaia Elizaran´s dance company will bring the ‘Basque Window´ spotlight to a close with ´Mar´, a show inspired by the incessant movement of the ocean. This is the company´s fourth production – the first one made for the theatre – and features live music by Xabi Zeberio.

The artists performing at the ´Basque Window´ will also offer masterclass sessions to students of different disciplines and take part in question-and-answer sessions.

Basque. Music. at BIME Pro Bogotá

Basque artists will not only be at Bogota’s Teatro Mayor. This year BIME Pro, the international meeting in Bilbao dedicated to music industry professionals, will cross the Atlantic for the first time. BIME Pro Bogotá will take place from May 4th to 7th. ‘Basque. Music.’ – an initiative promoted by Musika Bulegoa, the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Basque Government to raise the international profile of music made in the Basque Country – will take part in the event with the aim of building artistic and professional bridges between Latin America and the Basque Country. The Colombian capital is not only part of the UNESCO Creative Cities network, in the music category, but is also an outstanding reference point on the world music scene.

In addition, a Basque artist will have the chance to perform in a showcase in front of international programmers, thanks to Basque. Music.

Cundinamarca, priority region

Bogotá, as well as being the capital of Colombia, is the capital of the department of Cundinamarca, a region that forms part of the Euskadi Strategic Alliances network.

The Basque Window promoted by the Etxepare Basque Institute wants to extend its reach to the fields of literature and film. Over the next few days, the Institute will be holding meetings with different entities in the Cundinamarca region and with the people in charge of infrastructures, festivals and cultural centres.
