With the advent of March the University of Szeged film series Cinema Paradiso also returns to the University of Szeged (Hungary). The cycle will provide a schedule of six films in six different languages, subtitled in English or Hungarian. And thanks to the work of Oxel Uribe-Etxebarria, Basque Language and Culture lecturer of the Etxepare Basque Institute at the university, the Basque cinema will also have its own place in the program.
The Basque-speaking film offered this year will be Bertsolari (2011), directed by Asier Altuna. It will be screened on March 5 at 18: 00etan in the Department of Hispanic Studies (Petőfi S. 30-34 Fszt sgt...)
Bertsolari is a documentary film that premiered in the official section of the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2011. It was later released in cinemas in the Basque Country, Madrid and Barcelona with a good reception of the public (over 16,000 people). Now there is also the possibility to see it on the internet through the Filmin digital platform. The movie is also currently participating in various festivals around the world.
In the words of the director, Asier Altuna: "The idea was to make a film about the art of improvising verses in Basque. Along the way we encountered the poetry, the silence, the art laid bare and the precipice of improvisation. So we just improvised."
The Basque bertsolari from Vitoria-Gasteiz Xabier Rico and the Argentinian payador from Chascomús Juan Alberto Lalanne will give a conference that will detail the differences and similarities between Basque and American verse improvisers. The talk will be offered at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina.
The conference has been organized by the Basque Language and Culture readership of the Etxepare Basque Institute at the UNLP, that welcomed a new teacher last Spring: Daniel Oiarbide is now in charge of both the college classes and the organization of various activities related to the Basque language and culture, including this interesting chat scheduled for tomorrow. The new academic year will be held in Argentina from May to December.
"Bertsolaria Euskal Herrian & The Payador in Argentina" will begin at 6 pm at the Room 002, Faculty of Economics, UNLP.
As a result of the joint work between the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Mintzanet platform -of the group Maramara*- Basque artists and agents will offer, training sessions from the Basque Coutnry to the Institute students at international universitites, beginning tomorrow.
This project aims to enrich the academic offer of the Basque Language and Culture readerships of the Institute in 35 worldwide universities, and also to disseminate our culture further. The sessions will be done through the Mintzanet platform, created to give an opportunity to those who wish to practice Basque language and talk to other people through the internet. The virtual lessons will be recorded and later offered online.
The Institute readers were given the chance to ask for the participation of artists and agents of any culture sphere. In the first season the names chosen have been the writers Mark Kurlansky, Eider Rodriguez, Unai Elorriaga, Itxaro Borda, Arantxa Urretabizkaia y Karmele Jaio, the professors Iván Igartua and Iñaki Martinez de Luna and the verse improviser Miren Amuriza. Once more again, the Basque language students at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan have organised the Basque Days (April 9-11), a festival that aims to bring the Basque culture outside from the University and make it known in the city. The main characteristic of the festival is the collaboration with external fundations and institutions, in order to achieve a major public. In the program of this year, we can underline the collaboration with the story-tellers group Karawana Opowiesi, the screening of the film Gazta Zati Bat (sutitled by the students of the Basque lecturership into Polish) at the Muza Cinema, the Basuw Veganfood cooked and served by the Skad Bierzesz Bialko group, the online contest organised thanks to the help of the SuperMemo publishing house, the Basque language lesson at the Science and Arts Festival, the food tasting and pintxo contest at the Pika Pika bar and the many activities organised at the Glosna and Dragon club: lectures, debates and the ending party.
