This motto for this year’s Korrika is ‘Harro herri’ (Be proud, people). The fun run fundraiser in support of the Basque language will traverse streets across the globe. AEK, the Korrika organiser, will once again be joined by the Etxepare Basque Institute to raise the profile of the Basque language around the world. Members of Euskal Etxeak (Basque centres), and students and teachers from the Etxepare network of university Basque studies lecturers and language assistants have organised various activities. In total, the Institute will promote 30 Korrika initiatives in 28 cities around the world.

The 23rd Korrika will take place from 14 to 24 March. Over the course of 11 days the fun run will cover around 2,500 kilometres through the Basque Country, starting in Irun and finishing in Baiona.

In collaboration with the Etxepare Basque Institute, 28 cities around the world will host initiatives to celebrate Basque language festival: 16 in Europe (Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Poland...); 11 in the Americas (Argentina, Uruguay, Canada, USA...); one in Asia (Tokyo) and one in Oceania (Sydney).

Some of the activities are organised by the Basque language and culture lecturers at Etxepare partner universities. Through different programmes, the Etxepare Basque Institute promotes training for both teachers and students of Euskara.

Other activities have been organised by the Euskal Etxeak (Basque centres) around the world. The Institute works closely with these centres both through the Euskara Munduan programme and by sending teaching materials.

In many of these cities, the students and teaching staff have joined members of the Basque centres to organise activities to promote the Korrika, a sign of the cohesion of the Basque community on an international level. Most importantly, ´Korrika Txikiak´ or small races will run in parallel to the official Korrika.

As in previous editions, this year the Etxepare Basque Institute has joined Korrika to shine a spotlight on the Basque language internationally. Etxepare has also organised a video competition among members of the Euskal Etxeak and the university network in collaboration with AEK and will sponsor ‘Etxepare’ at the Xaho dock in Baiona on 24 March, the last day of the competition.
