2023-06-30

This year the Euskal Etxeak (Basque centres) of Valencia and Madrid have organised a podcast competition for the first time. With support from the Etxepare Basque Institute, the objective is to foster the use and proliferation of the Basque language within the Basque centers across Europe. The competition was aimed at Basques in the Basque Diaspora and students outside the Basque Country studying Euskara at Basque centres, official language schools and university programmes.

The podcasts were presented from the Euskal Etxeak of Valladolid, Valencia, Madrid and Bordeaux, and from the Language School of Valencia. The jury, made up of teachers from the Euskal Etxeak in Valencia and Madrid, selected the two winning podcasts from among the 14 entries submitted. The evaluation process included the assessment of the language´s appropriateness, originality, creativity, and technical quality. The two winning podcasts, sent from Madrid, were ‘Akelarre Festa’ and ‘Winnipeg’.

The awards ceremony took place on Friday 23rd in Valencia, where a selection was made from the podcasts submitted and the winners were announced. The event was also the farewell party for this year´s Basque students. The Etxepare Basque Institute handed out the prizes, which consisted of a selection of books and audiovisual materials in Basque.

But the celebrations aren’t over yet. At the end of the month, in addition to the 1st European Podcast Competition, the Euskal Etxea of Madrid will announce the awards for the 11th Basque Poetry Competition. The first prize in the 11th Basque Poetry Competition organised by the Euskal Etxea of Madrid, in partnership with the Etxepare Basque Institute, the Susa publishing house and the Erein publishing house, went to Aingeru Otxotorena Uralde for his poem ‘Maite Min´. The prize awarded by the members of the Euskal Etxea went to María Izaga Aguirre for her poem ´Bidali gabekoak´.
