On Thursday 26 February, the Sorbonne University in Paris will be hosting a conference entitled ‘Les nationalismes sans État au XXIe siècle. Imaginaires, représentations et débats’.
The event will be organised and coordinated by researchers and lecturers from various institutions: Teresa Larruzea (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle/ Etxepare Basque Institute), Mònica Güell and David Marcilhacy (Sorbonne Université / CRIMIC) and Maitane Ostolaza (Université de Perpignan / CRESEM).
Drawing on the political backdrop of the nationalist movements that emerged in the process of European decolonisation in the second half of the 20th century, the conference will address historical events and cultural manifestations since the 1960s from a multidisciplinary perspective that combines history, cultural studies and political science.
What are the main arguments behind the political claims of these nationalist movements? What is their genealogy? How do these social and territorial contradictions appear in art or literature?
The five presentations during the day will explore the cases of Catalonia and the Basque Country (Spain and France), Ireland and Scotland (United Kingdom), Switzerland and the French Antilles.
The participants in the presentations are Carles Santacana (Universitat de Barcelona), Ismael Manterola (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU), Maitane Ostolaza (Université de Perpignan /UPVD), Mònica Güell (Sorbonne Université), Benjamine Toussaint (Sorbonne Université), Onintza Odriozola (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU), Niall Cullen (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU), Nicolas Berjoan (Université de Perpignan/ UPVD), Renée-Clementine Lucien (Sorbonne Université) and Antoine Chollet (Université de Lausanne / UNIL).
