Activities on Basque literature and orality in Madrid

The Basque Etxepare Institute has organized various activities related to Basque literature ans orality in Madrid, between June 4 and 10: two round tables, one on the translation of literature written in Basque and the other on the Basque oral literature, and also two screenings of the movie "Bertsolari ".

There will also be a stand about the newest and more relevant Basque literature: the stand number 129, organized by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Gremio de Editores de Euskadi.

The first meeting will be on June 4 at the Madrid Book Fair in the esdelibro.es Activities Hall (Parque del Retiro) at 6:30 pm: it will be the roundtable "Writing in Basque, publishing in Spanish”, organized  thanks to the partnership between the Institute and the Basque Etxepare Editors Guild of Euskadi. This meeting will address the ways in which publishers and market literature in Spanish welcome translations of literature originally written in Basque language. They will also inform the audience on the latest works translated.

This meeting will be attended by Josu Zabaleta , National Translation Award in 2013 , Karlos Cid , translator and professor at the Complutense University , and writers and Karmele Jaio and Rikardo Arregi, novelist and poet respectively , which have most of their translated into Spanish work. Arantzazu Fernandez will be responsible for moderating the roundtable, in which issues such as self-translation, editorial policies, subsidies translation dictionary pleasure or relationships between writers and translators will be discussed.

Five days later, on June 9, at 6:30 pm and at the Casa del Libro in Matadero Madrid, Xabier Paya, bertsolari ( Basque oral poet or improviser of verses ), translator, professor and researcher of Basque language and culture , will present his book published in three languages by Etxepare  Basque Institute “Antología Oral Vasca-Euskal ahozko literaturaren Antologia-Anthology of Basque oral literature”, as part of the roundtable "Oral literature in the Basque Country". Paya ´s work reflects the set of oral literary expressions of Basque culture through examples of different genres, selected after a long process of analysis. Asier Altuna , film director , will also give his view of one of those genres that greater social importance and is currently broadcast in the Basque Country: bertsolaritza or oral improvisation of sung verses. His contribution will be based on his experience in the development of the documentary film "Bertsolari". Paya and Altuna be accompanied by Mari Jose Olaziregi , Director for the Promotion and Dissemination of the Basque language of the Etxepare Basque Institute, who will present and moderate the panel discussion .

Finally, on June 9 (8:00 pm ) and 10  (9:30 pm) the Matadero Madrid Cinematheque  will screen the film "Bertsolari" ( Asier Altuna, 2011), with the participation of the director, who will attend a Q&A session about the movie with the audience.
