What you’ll learn here
BASQUE, Zinema´ chronicles the diverse history of cinema in the Basque Country, tracing it from the introduction of the first cinematograph in the region to the modern-day international achievements of Basque-language films. The book examines milestones like the release of the first Basque-language film, ´Gure Sor Lekua´, and recent achievements such as the winning of ten Goya awards by ´Handia´ in 2018. It also addresses topics such as the influence of public funding policies and the significance of institutions including the San Sebastian Festival and the Basque Film Archive, and the development of Basque cinema across various historical periods. The book not only celebrates past achievements, but also explores future challenges and opportunities, underlining the role of Basque cinema as a powerful cultural ambassador and a vehicle for the preservation and promotion of the Basque language.
