Isabel Azkarate (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1950) has had an extensive career as a photographer and photojournalist. Over the course of several decades, she has used her camera to document cultural, social, and political life, creating a valuable visual archive.
Her photographs capture both current events and everyday scenes, with a special focus on portraits of artists, writers, and musicians, as well as the changing landscapes of urban and rural spaces.
Alongside her press work, Azkarate has cultivated her own photographic style that blends aesthetic sensitivity with a documentary spirit. Her work reflects a close, direct perspective that links personal memory with collective history.
The Cervantes Institute in New York is currently presenting a retrospective of her work, offering a chance to explore some of her most representative series. Azkarate is an artist whose work has helped enrich contemporary photography in the Basque Country and beyond.
