Conference with Ibon Manterola at Goethe University in Frankfurt

In addition to teaching Basque language and culture, other activities focused on Basque culture are also being carried out in readerships around the world. The Basque Language and Culture reader organized a conference on June 21 at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.

In addition to teaching Basque language and culture, other activities focused on Basque culture are also being carried out in readerships around the world. The Basque Language and Culture reader organized a conference on June 21 at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.

A number of professors, researchers and students at the Goethe University Institute of Empirical Linguistics are interested in the situation of endangered languages. For this reason, the university has invited the linguist Ibon Manterola to speak.

The conference will be called “Basque-medium education and its contribution to the revitalization of the language: current challenges”. Manterola will analyze the language model used at schools and how it affects the process of Basque language normalization. He will also analyze the controversy surrounding the latest sociolinguistic surveys.

Ibon Manterola is a professor at the UPV/EHU and a member of UNESCO / UNITWIN Chairs. He is also holds a PhD in linguistics and in 2014 published his doctoral thesis on Basque language immersion in early childhood education.

This conference is supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of Goethe Institute for Romance Studies.
