Jasone Cenoz will be this year’s Koldo Mitxelena visiting professor in residence at the University of Chicago. Sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute, the theme of Cenoz’s programme will revolve around multilingualism.
Jasone Cenoz is Professor of Research and Diagnostic Methods in Education at the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Anthropology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and President of the Education Commission of the State Research Agency (AEI). Her research focuses on multilingual education and second- and third-language acquisition.
Cenoz will teach a course for undergraduate and postgraduate students from 20 March to 31 May focusing on current approaches to multilingualism and multilingual education from a psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and educational perspective.
As part of the programme Cenoz will give a talk entitled ‘The Basque language in education: between isolation and translanguage’, on 11 May at 15:30 (GMT -5) in room 301 of the Rosenwald building. She will present the social and educational situation of the Basque language and analyse the concept of translocation as a threat and opportunity for Basque as a minority language.
The Koldo Mitxelena Chair at the University of Chicago is one of the twelve Chairs promoted by the Etxepare Basque Institute at universities around the world. The programme is run through the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and offers classes, seminars, and lectures related to Basque Studies.
