More than 27.000 signatures to use Basque language in Apple

The presence of Basque language is widening in the technology sector. We can be active users of social media and many operating systems -such as, for example, Windows- in Euskera, sometimes thanks to popular mobilization, and others by self-initiative of the company. Now, thanks to a petition on the web Change.org, we may soon be able to use Apple systems in Euskera.

The campaign was promoted by Xabier Martinez in spring 2013, when he created a petition on Change.org to ask Apple to offer its systems and services in the Basque language. The petition says that "to preserve the culture and language, it is necessary to use in our day a day"; "In this globalized world" Basque language must be used as a technology, and therefore, there must be the possibility to surf the Apple systems in that language.

The request has exceeded the 27,000 signatures needed, thanks to the large increase that had this past July: According to data from the web, on July 21 they had 2,424 signatures and 27,002 only ten days later, -in part thanks to the impact of social media-. These signatures will be submitted to Tim Cook and three other directors of Apple. As Xabier Martin says on his website, he has collected the signatures and the over 142 comments in 830 pages. Now it remains to be seen whether Apple executives give the final step and Basque users have the opportunity to use its programs and services in Euskera.
