Ramiro Pinilla: that unforgettable writer
Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.
The writer Ramiro Pinilla (Bilbao, 1923 - Getxo 2014) died on October 19 at 91 years of age. Pinilla was one of the leaders of the renewing power of Basque narrative in Castilian; he won the Euskadi Prize twice (“La tierra convulsa”, 2004, and “Aquella edad inolvidable”, 2012), plus the National Fiction Prize (“Las cenizas del hierro”, 2005) and the Nadal (“Las ciegas hormigas”, 1960). In 2012 he was also awarded with the Lan Onari Award, given by the Basque Government, along with Ramon Saizarbitoria.
While Ramiro Pinilla`s literary career began in the late 50’s of the last century, it was not until midway through the first decade of the century when, aged 80, his career got boost with the publication of the great work of his life contained in the trilogy entitled "Verdes valles, colinas rojas" ("Green valleys, red hills"). Pinilla spent 18 years writing this book, composed by por ´La tierra convulsa´, ´Los cuerpos desnudos´ and ´Las cenizas del hierro´, achieving his vision of the world through his homeland.
Ramiro Pinilla used to say that she wanted to leave some trace through his writing; that goal is fully accomplished, his work will always be with us. Rest in peace.
