The Etxepare Basque Institute celebrates the International Day of Euskera in six cities around the world

As in every year, the celebration of Basque Language Day - December 3 - will reach different corners of Europe and America through cultural programmes organized by the network of readers of the Etxepare Basque Institute. With these events, the Institute recognizes the work of the 29 teachers of Basque language and culture and the more than 1500 students who study Euskera in 34 universities in 18 countries.
As in every year, the celebration of Basque Language Day - December 3 - will reach different corners of Europe and America through cultural programmes organized by the network of readers of the Etxepare Basque Institute. With these events, the Institute recognizes the work of the 29 teachers of Basque language and culture and the more than 1500 students who study Euskera in 34 universities in 18 countries.
This year, six cities will host the celebrations with different cultural activities from November 23 to December 12: Santiago de Chile (Chile), Bologna (Italy), La Plata (Argentina), Havana (Cuba), Cork (Ireland) and Barcelona.
Santiago de Chile was the first city to kick-off the celebrations, with cultural, culinary and festive activities throughout the day on November 23. Events included a conference on the Basque language, a pintxos tasting, an Euskera workshop and the screening of the documentary Bertsolari (Asier Altuna, 2011).
In Bologna, participants will enjoy a presentation by the writer Iban Zaldua and the film Amama (Asier Altuna, 2015). In La Plata, different activities have been organized in collaboration with the city’s Euskal Etxea (Basque Center), including talks, a mintzodromo (meeting for practicing spoken Basque), and film screenings.
In Havana the highlight will be music, featuring of Cuban artists who will perform Basque songs. In Cork there will be two conferences at the university and, finally, in Barcelona the musician Rafa Rueda will give two performances where, in addition to singing, he will talk about the lyrics of his songs – an unprecedented show to date.
