The visit of the Basque writers Harkaitz Cano and Rikardo Arregi in May 10 to the International Poetry Festival Silesius in Wroclaw, was a success. Both authors presented their poem work (Norbait dabil sute-eskaileran from Harkaitz Cano and Kartografia from Rikardo Arregi), and after, they visited Poznan and Warsaw to meet Basque language and culture students in the universities of both cities.

This activity was organized with the support of Etxepare Basque Institute. As the reader of Warsow Aitor Arruza says, “the conference was successful and they managed to fill the classroom”; with the writer Gerardo Beltrán, both writers conversed about the poetry and traduction for an hour and a half.

In the first part of the conference, the writers dialogued about the relation between the poets and traductors, and the second part was devoted to W. Szymborska´s poem: one pupil read the original poem in Polish, and then, Cano and Arregi read the traduction of this poem in Basque, and Beltrán in Spanish. The conference finished with one lecture session of Cano and Arregi.

The Poetry Festival is organized within the literary programme of the European Capital of Culture Wroclaw 2016 and was hold in May 8-15, being one of the most relevant cultural events in the country: it collects a wide compilation of contemporary Polish poetry, as well as from other origins.

In addition, the event includes: several of ‘Meet the Author’ sessions with Polish as well as foreign poets, panels discussions led by university experts in the field of lyric poetry, music concerts, lessons designed for school pupils, encouraging them to commune with poems and guiding how to do it, and last but not least, the Wroclaw Silesius Poetry Award ceremony.
