The Basque film festival in Berlin – Baskisches filmfestival – will be held from November 15th to 18th. This will be the festival’s 6th edition, organized by the Euskal Etxea Basque Centre of Berlin with support from the Etxepare Basque Institute.

This year’s programme brings acclaimed recent Basque films to the German capital. Kalebegiak will open the festival on November 15th. This film is a 12-part feature vignette of San Sebastian made by well-known Basque filmmakers including Julio Medem, Gracia Querejeta, Daniel Calparsoro, Asier Altuna and Borja Cobeaga, among others. Errementari (The Blacksmith and the Devil) will be screened the following day, November 16th. The successful debut by director Paul Urkijo, produced by the renowned filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia, will be shown for the first time in Berlin.

On November 17th festival-goers will be able to see the music documentary Atrapados por la Serpiente (Caught by the Snake). This film tells the history of the now-defunct Basque indie-rock band Cancer Moon, focusing on guitarist Jon Zamarripa and vocalist Josetxo Anitua. To close the festival, on November 18th, one of the most successful Basque films of recent years will be shown: Handia. This movie, directed by Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi and based on the incredible life of the giant of Altzo, won 10 Goya awards in 2017.

The festival will also bring some special guests. Director Paul Urkijo and stylist Nerea Torrijos from the film Errementari, and actor Joseba Usabiaga from Handia will be among them.

All the films will be shown at 8 p.m. at the Kino Moviemento cinema in Basque with English subtitles.
