The Spanish Film Academy has announced three films to vie for the nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 93rd Academy Awards (The Oscars). Two out of three are Basque: The Endless Trench (La trinchera infinita) by Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño and José Mari Goenaga, and The Platform (El hoyo) by Galder Gaztelu Urrutia. The third one in competition is Fire Will Come (O que arde) by Oliver Laxe, co-produced by Basque production company Kowalski Films.

The Endless Trench is the third film by Moriarti Produkzioak to be selected by the Spanish Film Academy after Flowers (Loreak) (2014) and Giant (Handia) (2017). This story about the Spanish Civil War was awarded the Silver Shell and the Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at the San Sebastian Film Festival and has received two Goya Awards (out of 15 nominations), among others. On this occasion it competes for the first time against another Basque film.

The Platform has had a successful career too. This genre film has received important recognitions in Toronto, Sitges and the Goya Awards. Gaztelu Urrutia´s first feature film was also one of the most viewed on Netflix during the confinement.

On October 3rd it will be decided who will represent Spain at the famous Hollywood awards, postponed this year to April 21st. Congratulations and good luck to everyone!
