Since 2010 Dalkey Archive Press has been publishing the Best European fiction, an anthology that gathers the year’s best fiction by authors from around the world. This year they have included a story by Basque writer Xabier Montoia among the best of 2018: My Mother Calls Me a Pirate.

The text originally written in Basque can be read in English, translated by Kristin Addis. Since its inaugural appearance in 2010, Best European Fiction has become an essential resource for readers, critics, and publishers interested in contemporary European literature. In this, the ninth installment of the series, the anthology continues its commitment to bringing together some of the most exciting prose written in Europe today. Best European Fiction 2018 is a compendium of stories by both established writers and newcomers.

It is not the first time the anthology has included Basque authors. In previous editions, stories have been published by Karmele Jaio, Iban Zaldua and Harkaitz Cano.
