“Let’s make these people dance!” (Pongamos este pueblo a bailar), a line from a song by the Basque band Glaukoma, is the slogan for this year’s EH Sona festival, set to celebrate its 21st edition from November 9th to December 14th. As in past years, several Basque bands will give concerts at different venues in Barcelona. The public will also enjoy other non-musical activities as part of the parallel programme Alter EH Sona.

This festival, organized by the Euskal Etxea Basque Centre of Barcelona, is the biggest gathering of Basque music outside the Basque Country. The goal of the festival is to raise the profile of Basque music and to foster relations between the Basque and Catalan cultures. This year the festival will be divided into two areas: concerts by Basque bands at several halls around the city; and workshops and performances that do not strictly fall into the category of music. The latter activities are under the name Alter EH Sona.

As for concerts, the following bands will perform this year: Zizel, Aneguria, Lilit i Dionis, Su ta Gar, Liher, Smoking Souls, Willis Drummond, Kepa Junkera, Glaukoma and Doctor Deseo. Click here for more on the concert calendar.

Additionally, Alter Eh Sona will offer two different cultural activities. First, photography workshops will be offered by Basque concert photographers Ikor Kotx, Igotz Ziarreta and Eider Iturriaga. The people who sign up for these workshops will have free admission to some of the concerts to take pictures, with the help of the workshop instructors. Second, the band 2 Princeses Barbudes will offer a show that mixes music and storytelling called Enaren Kontuak. Click here for more on the Alter EH Sona calendar.

The Euskal Etxea Basque Centre of Barcelona has received support from the Etxepare Basque Institute for the organization of the EH Sona festival.
