Grants for the internationalisation of Basque literature

2025/05/08

Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.

To promote the translation and international reach of Basque literature, we have launched several financial support initiatives. With this aid, our goal is to impact every stage of the process of internationalising Basque literature and to support all those involved (writers, translators, editors, publishing houses) throughout the journey, from the initial translation of excerpts to pique the interest of foreign publishers, to the international dissemination of these works.

In 2025, we will allocate €91,000 to this purpose, providing support to writers, translators, publishers, and literary agents.

Below is a description of the different types of grants available:

1-AT! Itzulpena: literatura laginak

This initiative focuses on translating excerpts or samples of works written in Basque into English or French. Its goal is to help authors, translators, publishers, and agents prepare materials to present literary works to potential publishers.

The total grant amount available is €8,000 and is open to writers, translators, publishers, and agents. Excerpts must not exceed 15% of the original work. The deadline is 15 August 2025.

3-Ça Colle au basque

As part of the ‘Ça colle au Basque’ project, dedicated to increasing the visibility of Basque culture in French-speaking regions, we have launched a specific call for proposals to encourage the translation, publication and dissemination in French of works written in Basque.

Publishers, authors, translators, and agents from the Basque Country and abroad may submit applications, which will be reviewed in three stages:

  • The selected candidates will explore potential publishers in the French-speaking world.
  • A fragment of the work will be translated (if necessary).
  • A publication agreement will be established with a publisher.

The project will span three years with an annual budget of €20,000. The deadline for the first edition is July 7.
