International students learn Basque in Zornotza

22 students who study Basque language and culture through the Etxepare Basque Institute’s international university network are currently attending an intensive course at the Aurten Bai residential language school in Amorebieta-Etxano. The programme began on 3 August and will run until 14 August.

The group includes five students from Poland, four from the United States, four from Germany and four from Spain — three from Barcelona and one from Madrid — as well as one student each from Finland, France, Italy, Chile and Uruguay.

Previously, another group of 16 students took part in the programme from 13 to 24 July. In total, 38 students are participating in these intensive courses this summer, which offer students of Basque language and culture at universities abroad the opportunity to consolidate and deepen the knowledge acquired during the academic year.

Scholarships to learn Basque

Since 2012, the Etxepare Basque Institute has offered scholarships for Basque-language immersion stays. Through its agreement with the Aurten Bai Foundation, students from the Institute’s university network have the opportunity to attend intensive courses at the Aurten Bai residential language school in Amorebieta-Etxano.

These stays complement the training students receive at their home universities during the academic year, enabling them to deepen their knowledge of Basque and put the language into practice in an immersive environment.

Etxepare Euskal Institutua promotes the teaching of Basque language and culture at universities around the world, with the aim of promoting and raising the international profile of Basque Studies. During the 2024–2025 academic year, Basque language and culture courses were taught at 35 universities in 19 countries, with more than 1,300 students enrolled.
