Within the framework of the Manuel Irujo Chair, promoted by Etxepare Euskal Institutua at the University of Liverpool, researcher Carmen Gil Fombellida will give a lecture on 14 April entitled ‘Comics Without Land: An Overview of the 1939 Basque Theatrical Exile in America and Europe’.

The lecture offers an overview of the main figures and works of Basque theatre in exile following the Spanish Civil War of 1936. There are significant examples in which exile can be understood as a context of opportunity — a space of creative freedom that was impossible on postwar Spanish stages.

During the session, the trajectories of these artists and writers will be analysed, with particular attention to their contributions to dramatic literature, stage direction, and other performing arts disciplines.

The presentation will also include graphic materials illustrating the theatrical activity developed in host countries across the Americas and Europe.

  • 14 April, 4pm (GMT+1), Rendall Building, Seminar Room 2, University of Liverpool, and online
