Basque Studies at the University of Liverpool: applications now open for the Manuel Irujo Scholarship
2026/04/08
Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.
Candidates may now apply for the Manuel Irujo Scholarship in Basque Studies, offered jointly by the University of Liverpool and the Etxepare Basque Institute. This scholarship, effective from September 2026, is an opportunity for postgraduate students to undertake a research project on the Basque Country within an international academic context.
The scholarship provides approximately £5,000 in financial aid. Students must be enrolled in one of several MA programmes at the University of Liverpool: Modern Languages and Cultures, Translation, Film Studies, History or Political Science and International Relations. The main objective of the grant is to promote research on the Basque Country from contemporary and multidisciplinary perspectives.
The call for applications will specifically consider projects focusing on cultural production, cultural history or politics in the Basque Country. In this regard, studies on historical memory, exile and the diaspora are of particular interest, as are European and cosmopolitan perspectives – themes closely linked to the life and work of Manuel Irujo. Proposals from other fields are also welcome, including digital culture, gender studies, literature, film, or comparative approaches linking the Basque Country with other contexts.
Applicants wishing to apply for the scholarship must submit a research project proposal. The selection process will value both the quality of the project and the applicant’s academic standing.
The deadline for applications is 31 July 2026. More information about the scholarship and MA programmes can be found here.
