Two open calls for the translation of Basque literary works
2026/03/23
Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.
To encourage the translation and global reach of Basque literature, we have launched two new calls for submissions. Through these calls, we aim to impact every stage of the process of internationalising Basque literature. We want to support all stakeholders involved – authors, translators, editors, and publishers –throughout the entire journey, from the initial samples designed to spark the interest of foreign publishers to the international dissemination of the works.
Below is a description of the two new calls for submissions.
1. AT! Itzulpena: literatura laginak (2026)
This call for submissions is for the translation into English or French of excerpts or samples from literary works written in Basque. The objective is to provide translators, publishers and literary agents with material to use when pitching literary works to potential international publishers.
The programme has a total budget of €8,000 and is open to authors, translators, publishers and literary agents. Excerpts must not exceed 15% of the original work. Applications will be accepted until 31 December 2026.
2. Ça Colle au Basque: itzulpena (2026)
This call for submissions is part of Ça colle au basque, an initiative designed to promote Basque culture within the French-speaking community. The call supports the translation of works written in Basque into French, as well as their publication and dissemination.
Applications may be submitted by publishers, authors, translators or agents from both the Basque Country and abroad. The process will involve three stages:
- The selected candidates will analyse publications from the French-speaking world
- A sample of the work will be translated (if necessary)
- The publishing agreement will be formally signed with the publisher
This call for submissions is now in its second year and will remain open until 30 June.
