"The Perils of Obedience" by Itziar Barrio in New York

Itziar Barrio has continued working on her project The Perils of Obedience this Summer, at the Abrons Arts Center in New York. The first stage of the project was carried out in Spain during BAD, Bilbao Theater and Contemporary Dance Festival in 2010;  the artist from Bilbao has continued that line of work, with a series of performances that explore power dynamics and constructed situations. It is a blend of theatrical, film and personal experiences that manipulates the methods of a rehearsal, revealing the mechanisms used behind the scenes of a production. Repetition and variation are taken to the extreme to expand the possibilities of the performance. The project has been sponsored by the Basque Institute Etxepare.

The performance Rehearsal. The Perils of Obedience was performed on July 10 and 11 in New York; the Basque artist, who has lived and worked for years in the United States, brought together a large and devoted audience, familiar with her work, at the the Abrons Arts Center.  Besides, the Delegation of the Basque Country in the United States attended the closing ceremony on July 11. "The Delegation of Euskadi is very proud of Itziar Barrio’s efforts. With her presence in the United States she has become, in a way, an ambassador of our culture in this country and she is very helpful in the international promotion of the Basque art, as a part of the brand Basque Country" said Ander Caballero, Delegate of the Basque Government in the U.S.
