Basque literature will be represented from 8 to 11 May in Greece once again at the Thessaloniki Book Fair. Writer, translator and journalist Danele Sarriugarte will be taking part in the fair’s 21st edition with support from the Etxepare Basque Institute.

The cultural fair, held annually at the International Exhibition and Congress Center in Thessaloniki, Greece, stands as one of the nation´s most beloved cultural initiatives. Its mission is to acquaint visitors with contemporary publications from across the globe.

Danele Sarriugarte will participate in the following events:

9 May

  • 3:00pm: ´Smaller Languages in Translation, Gender and International Dialogue´. The discussion will focus on the evolution of language, the challenges especially faced in the case of smaller languages when translating gender and queer related books, and how a translator responds to this new vocabulary while the language is still ‘under construction’.

10 May

  • 10:00am: ´A Literary Encounter Between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe´. How are books selected for translation in the North compared to the South? What are the reading preferences of Mediterranean readers compared to Northern Europeans? Common points of reference and different cultural environments that contribute to the palimpsest of European culture today.

The fair focuses on showcasing new publications, fostering literary exchange, and creating networks among experts in the international book market. Some of the main attractions of the fair include readings and roundtable discussions, providing visitors with the opportunity to share their perspectives on contemporary literary themes.
