Guéoir, by Xare Alvarez and Karlos Martinez

Committed to placing research in the context of a residency, Guéoir has emerged as a reflection process, after observing the area. The term guéoir (Guérir-to heal), refers to an item of the local heritage of Lorraine (France). This is a stone structure that was originally used for conditioning horses legs. The project will be carried out using techniques ranging from drawing to sculpture. Local tools will be used as well as natural elements that can be found in the environment, and moulds will be made of the parts that have been eroded, either through use or due to exposure to weather phenomena.

The pieces will be prepared in this context, in order to try and establish a link between nature and culture, by considering sculptural expression to be a performative aspect. This process will be structured around two main themes: the first concerns the traces that objects leave behind and possible interpretations based on their use and appearance; while the second is based on architectural language as a vestige of a period.

Xare Alvarez (Donostia/San Sebastian 1990) graduated in Art from the University of the Basque Country and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts de Paris – ENSBA. His latest work, 15/32, was exhibited as part of the programme of new artists from Gipuzkoa, where it was awarded an honorary mention.

Karlos Martinez (Durango, 1982) studied graphic arts and design, as well as history and geography by UNED. He has received a number of awards, including Ertibil, Injuve and Generación 2015. He has also held staged solo and collective exhibitions and projects on the domestic and international stage.

Anne-Charlotte Finel

Anne-Charlotte Finel is a video-creator and is currently working on the theme of water, taking its movement and matter as her starting point. She has made a number of recordings in different journeys in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Now, during her residency at Tabakalera, Anne-Charlotte plans to analyse how nature and the city coexist.

Based on her observation of the urban beaches of Donostia/San Sebastian, she will record images for a video installation; on a multi-screen, she will show the transformation of the city´s coast at different times of day and the way in which this influences the city.

The videos will be accompanied by music by Luc Kheradmand. Anne-Charlotte Finel (Paris, 1986) has a diploma in visual arts from the ENSBA in Paris and completed further studies in the US. She currently lives and works in Paris, and works closely with the Jousse Entreprise gallery.

Her latest projects have been exhibited in Paris, Toulouse, Orsay and Lyon.
