As part of the 2025 programme of the Amale Artetxe Chair, professor and researcher Óscar Álvarez Gila will carry out a series of activities in Argentina. During his stay at UNSAM – Universidad Nacional de San Martín in Buenos Aires, he will deliver the seminar “Emigration and Diaspora: A Perspective from the Basque Model” on 5, 6, 10, and 11 November. The sessions will explore different aspects of how Basque identity is shaped within the diaspora. Among other topics, the seminar will address key concepts related to emigration and diaspora, the historical origins of Basque migration, the evolution of diaspora associations, and the construction of Basque identity abroad — looking at both its past and future. He will also deliver a conference titled ‘Los vascos nunca fueron esclavistas: historia y mito en torno a una (des)memoria’ (Basques were never slaves: history and myth about memory—and forgetfulness—) on November 6.

Óscar Álvarez Gila holds a PhD in History from the University of the Basque Country, where he currently serves as Associate Professor of American History. He has also been a Basque Visiting Fellow at the Centre for European Studies at the University of Oxford; W. Douglass Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Nevada, Reno; Elena Díaz-Verson Amos Eminent Scholar in Latin American Studies at Columbus State University; Magnus Mörner Memorial Professor at Stockholm University; and Jon Bilbao Chair at the University of Nevada, Reno.
