Alès
The Cratère Surfaces festival in Alès, France, will hold its 27th edition from 2 to 4 July this year, with the Basque Country as its guest region. With this invitation, seven Basque performing arts companies will be part of the festival’s official programme, and a further four will take part in Outdoor Lab Experience, the training and internationalisation programme organised as part of the festival.
The following companies will be performing as part of this Basque showcase: Rouge Elea, Bilaka, Harrobi Dantza Taldea, Deabru Beltzak, Osa+Mujika, Led Silhouette and Markeliñe. In addition, the Outdoor Lab programme will feature performances by Piszifaktoria, DAB, Komerobi Produkzioak and Dance&Music Creation.
To strengthen Basque cultural representation, the Etxepare Basque Institute launched a call for applications between October and November 2025, inviting street arts companies to submit their projects. In addition to the lineup of performances by Basque performing artists, the Basque Government, the Etxepare Basque Institute and Artekale have planned a range of professional activities as part of the festival. The official launch of the Basque showcase will take place on 4 July and the organisers have arranged a welcome cocktail for attendees.
This event is part of the Ça colle au basque initiative, the Etxepare Basque Institute’s strategic programme to promote the Basque language and culture within the French-speaking world. Through this programme, the Institute promotes international mobility for Basque creators, artistic collaborations and cultural exchanges.
Rouge Elea
This street arts company combines choreography, experimental music and circus acts in its productions. At Cratère Surfaces, the company will present ‘Lurruna’, a piece that casts a poetic gaze upon gravity. Drawing on bodies, objects, balance, imbalance and the laws of physics, it constructs a powerful visual experience. Alterations in perception, slow-motion sequences, shifts in gravity and rewind effects reveal the characters’ inner states, whilst the boundaries between different realities blur and redefine the limits of possibility.

Bilaka
Bilaka explores a contemporary choreographic language rooted in traditional Basque dance. At Cratère Surfaces, Bilaka will present ‘Dirau’, a piece built around the rhythms and beats of Basque music, constantly testing the body´s limits and freedom. They see tradition not as a fixed relic, but as a living, evolving force. Dirau becomes a choreographic expression of a living, ever-changing identity.

Harrobi Dantza Bertikala
This company blends vertical and contemporary dance, making urban space key to its creations. At Cratère Surfaces, the company will present’ Geure(R)a’. The piece explores the bonds that build community and the significance of shared space, transforming façades into a canvas for movement. Bodies defying gravity highlight mutual trust, balance and the power of collaboration, offering a poetic and contemporary interpretation of public space.

Deabru Beltzak
Deabru Beltzak, founded in 1996, is one of the Basque street theatre companies with the most extensive international experience. Since its inception, it has created 10 shows, delivered over 3,000 performances, and collaborated with more than 35 companies worldwide. At Cratère Surfaces, the group will present ‘Su Talka’. Impact, friction and percussion form the starting point for a show in which the sparks created by the impact of the drums are transformed into energy, uniting fire and rhythm. Colours, light, smells and sound shape an immersive experience in the public space, where pyrotechnics and choreography are combined with precision to place the audience at the heart of the action.

Osa+Mujika
Osa+Mujika brings the anxieties and contradictions of contemporary society to the stage through movement. Their creations combine powerfully physical expression, humour and highly visual stage imagery. At Cratère Surfaces, they will present ‘Tupper’. Taking an everyday object as its starting point, the piece constructs a universe centred on consumerism, excess and accumulation. The relationship between bodies and objects constantly transforms, while movement and choreography challenge the inertia of everyday life in a performance charged with irony and energy.

- Venue: Place de l´Hôtel de Ville
- July 3, 19:30 and 21:30

Led Silhouette
Led Silhouette will present ‘Los Perros’ at Cratère Surfaces, a production inspired by an idea and under the artistic direction of Marcos Morau. In the face of the uncertainty and dehumanisation of modern society, the piece offers a path of resistance. It is the story of two bodies that meet, fall and rise again, championing love, generosity and commitment through dance. Through repetition and catharsis, Los Perros transforms movement into a tool for expressing the vulnerability, anger and will to live of an entire generation.

- July 3, 23:00
- Venue: Cour Fort Vauban
Markeliñe
Markeliñe will present ‘Andante’ at Cratère Surfaces. A pair of anonymous shoes washed up by the sea serve as the jumping-off point for this performance. Whose are they? What stories do they conceal? Through visual theatre, masks and live music, the piece brings to light the lives marked by war, exile and migration in a wordless narrative of great emotional intensity. With a history spanning more than four decades, the company extends an invitation to memory and empathy through powerful visual poetry.

Outdoor Lab
The Basque companies Piszifaktoria, DAB, Komerobi Produkzioak and Dance&Music Creation will take part in the Outdoor Lab Experience training and internationalisation programme, part of the Cratère Surfaces festival. The four companies were selected through an open call aimed at street arts creators in the early stages of their international careers. The selection was carried out by programmers from various international festivals. In addition to participating in training sessions, companies will engage in professional meetings from 1 to 4 July, enjoy the festival programming, and present short showcases of their work –whether through pitches or performances – to international programmers and industry professionals.
