The 35th edition of the Maitaldia dance festival in Biarritz, Le Temps d´aimer la danse, runs from September 5 to 15. Eight dance companies from the Basque Country will take centre stage in a special programme called “Les compagnies du territoire”.
This initiative falls within the ‘Ça colle au basque’ programme, a joint collaboration between the Etxepare Basque Institute and Malandain Ballet Biarritz. The dance companies taking part in the festival this year are: Malandain Ballet Biarritz, Kukai Dantza, Bilaka Kolektiboa, Mizel Théret & Beñat Achiary, Dantzaz, Compagnie Á Pas Furtifs, Cie Project ra.re / Collectif Rabbit Research and AltxaLili Show.
Malandain Ballet Biarritz offers several opportunities to experience its talent first-hand. On 5 September at 9 pm, the company will present La Chambre d’amour at Biarritz´s Gare du Midi train station. Then, on 12 September at 9 p.m., they will perform Elgarrekin at the Municipal Casino in Biarritz and on 13 September at 8 pm, they will stage Elgarrekin again, this time at the Jai-Alai in Donibane-Garazi. Finally, on 14 September at 7 pm, they will perform Soirée de Ballets at the Lekuona Fabrika in Errenteria.
Mizel Théret and Beñat Achiary will offer three performances of their two-man show, Hizketak: The first will be on 7 September at 5 pm at the Itxassou fronton; then they will return to Biarritz to perform at Gare du Midi on 9 and 10 September at 7 pm.
The Kukai dance group will give two performances: Txalaparta on 6 September at 7 pm at the Municipal Casino in Biarritz, and Euskorleans on 13 September at 3 pm at Place Saint-Charles.
Cie Project Ba.Re will present Retour à Itak on two days in two locations: on 13 September at 5 pm in Daïna Hall, and on 14 September at 4 pm in Place Verdun in Hasparren.
Dantzaz will offer two shows: Hona on 9 September at 9:00 pm at the Municipal Casino in Biarritz and on 13 September at 8:00 pm at the Salle Larreko in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. On 14 September at 4:00 pm they will present Gesala at the fronton in Bardos.
The company Cie A Pas Furtifs will perform Sorcières on 14 September at 2 pm at Gare du Midi, Biarritz. Bilaka Kolektiboa will present Bezperan on 14 September at 7 pm at the Municipal Casino in Biarritz. Finally, AltxaLili will perform on 13 September at 10.30 pm at the Atabal concert hall in Biarritz.

Maitaldia - Le Temps d´Aimer la Danse is a well-known dance festival held every year in Biarritz. Its goal is to bring both classical and contemporary dance to a broad audience, with top-notch performances in theatres and outdoor spaces. The festival welcomes both local and international companies, and its name reflects the moment to celebrate the love of dance. Maitaldia also strives to foster passion, innovation, and participation in dance. Alongside the performances, the festival will hold a professional gathering on September 6th dedicated to the Basque choreographic system.
