The fist activity organized by the Etxepare Basque Institute in June in Madrid with the aim to promote the Basque Literature was held last Wednesday. The roundtable “Writing in Basque, publishing in Spanish”  took place within the Madrid Book Fair in esdelibro.es Activities Hall (El Retiro park) and was organized  thanks to the partnership between the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Editors Guild of Euskadi.

The participants were Josu Zabaleta , National Translation Award in 2013 , Karlos Cid , translator and professor at the Complutense University , and writers Karmele Jaio and Rikardo Arregi, novelist and poet respectively , which have most of their works translated into Spanish. Arantzazu Fernandez was responsible for moderating the roundtable.

This meeting addressed the ways in which publishers and market literature in Spanish welcome translations of literature originally written in Basque language. They also informed the audience on the latest Basque works translated.

Basque editions are also available at the 129 stand of the Madrid Book Fair, which will be a showcase for Basque literature these days.

But that’s not all: on June 9 Xabier Paya, will present his book published in three languages by Etxepare  Basque Institute “Anthology of Basque oral literature”, as a part of the roundtable "Oral literature in the Basque Country". Asier Altuna , film director , will also give his view of bertsolaritza or oral improvisation of sung verses. His contribution will be based on his experience in the development of the documentary film "Bertsolari", which will also be screened.
