The course will take place on 8 July at Miramar Palace in Donostia/San Sebastián and will explore the relationship between the Basque language and music.
Euskara. Kultura. Mundura.
Once again, the Etxepare Basque Institute joins forces with the University of the Basque Country’s Summer School to offer a course geared to Basque language teachers. It aims to strengthen training for current and future teachers and is open to anyone interested in language teaching or the humanities.
Bikaintasuna Euskal Ikasketetan XVI will explore a new theme while staying true to its educational objective: the relationship between music and the Basque language. Entitled ‘Euskara oholtzetan: musika, hizkuntza, nazioartea’ (Euskara on stage: music, language, internationalisation), the course will offer a half-day programme featuring leading music professionals and specialists, in collaboration with Euskal Herriko Musika Bulegoa Elkartea.
Topics include the presence of the Basque language in music; the diversity of contemporary Basque musical creation; artists’ linguistic choices; and their influence on internationalisation.
The course will take place on the morning of 8 July and can be either in person or followed online. Registration is now open.
The initiative offers an opportunity to share recent insights into Basque musical creation and the current state of music in the Basque language, and to learn about the main trends and emerging voices in the field. It will also encourage reflection on the challenges Basque musicians face internationally, identifying needs and strategic decisions for their global projection. The programme offers an opportunity to explore the relationship between the Basque language and music, analysing the language’s influence on creative processes, musical styles and audience connection.
Organised each year by the Etxepare Basque Institute, the course is also meant to strengthen the training of current and prospective teachers. While open to anyone interested in the Basque language or music, the course is of particular relevance to those who teach or wish to teach Basque abroad. The role of the lecturer involves teaching the Basque language and culture at universities outside the Basque Country. These instructors play a key role in promoting and revitalising the Basque language and culture within academia, organising cultural and campus activities and fostering intercultural exchange.
